AutoScope, 1996/1997

For the video installation AUTO SCOPE, Baranowsky drove around Paris’ périphérique – the ring road that separates the centre of the city from the banlieues. The drive took about one hour, during which the artist filmed the view of the buildings in the centre of the city. The video is presented slowed down on four projections; only the sections going through the motorway tunnels have been cut. While the first projection surface shows the original recording, the second projection mirrors the video of the first one. In turn, the third shows the mirror-inverted events of the second projection area etc. Trees and construction fences fold out like Rohrschach tests at the interfaces of the projections; cars and houses seem to merge into themselves. –Daniel Schreiber
